A simple yet stunning butter board featuring whipped butter, fresh herbs, edible flowers, and subtle seasonings, perfect for quick entertaining or casual snacking.

Ingredients

  • Unsalted butter, softened to room temperature (about 1/2 cup or 1 stick)
  • Fresh herbs: thyme sprigs, finely chopped chives, parsley leaves, dill fronds (optional)
  • Edible flowers: nasturtiums, pansies, or calendula petals (organic, pesticide-free)
  • Garlic, minced (optional, about 1 clove)
  • Lemon zest, freshly grated (about 1 teaspoon)
  • Flaky sea salt (Maldon or fleur de sel), to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Honey or maple syrup (optional, about 1 teaspoon)
  • Crusty bread or crackers, for serving (sourdough or baguette recommended)

Instructions

  1. Soften the butter by removing it from the fridge about 30 minutes before starting, or microwave in 5-second bursts if short on time.
  2. Rinse fresh herbs gently and pat dry. Remove thyme leaves from stems, chop chives finely, and keep parsley and dill fronds whole or roughly torn.
  3. Place softened butter in a bowl. Add minced garlic (if using), lemon zest, and a pinch of flaky sea salt. Stir gently with a spatula until well combined but still fluffy.
  4. Transfer the butter to your serving board. Spread it out in an uneven, rustic layer about 1/4 inch thick, leaving texture and swirls visible.
  5. Scatter fresh herbs evenly over the butter, mixing colors and textures. Add edible flowers sparingly for color contrast without overcrowding.
  6. Sprinkle with additional flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Drizzle honey or maple syrup lightly over one section. Optionally, add a tiny squeeze of lemon juice before serving.
  7. Serve immediately with crusty bread slices or crackers arranged alongside or on the board’s edges.

Notes

Soften butter properly for easy spreading; fold herbs gently to keep butter fluffy. Use fresh, tender herbs and pesticide-free edible flowers. Prepare butter mixture ahead and assemble board shortly before serving to keep herbs and flowers fresh. Store leftover butter mixture in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
