A refreshing twist on the classic Derby Day mint julep, this bourbon slush combines crushed ice, fresh mint, and simple syrup for a cool, crisp, and crowd-pleasing cocktail perfect for warm weather celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups bourbon whiskey (480 ml)
  • 1 cup fresh mint leaves (loosely packed)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (100 g)
  • 1 cup cold water (240 ml)
  • About 4 cups crushed ice (600 g)
  • Lemon slices (optional, for garnish)
  • Extra mint sprigs (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Make the simple syrup: In a small saucepan, combine ½ cup granulated sugar and 1 cup cold water. Heat over medium until sugar dissolves completely, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature (about 10 minutes).
  2. Muddle the mint: Place fresh mint leaves in a large mixing bowl or pitcher. Pour the cooled simple syrup over the mint. Using a muddler or wooden spoon, gently press and twist the mint leaves 8-10 times without over-muddling. Let steep for 10 minutes to infuse.
  3. Add bourbon: Stir 2 cups bourbon into the mint syrup and mix well. Set aside.
  4. Prepare the ice: Place about 4 cups crushed ice into a blender. Pour half of the bourbon-mint mixture over the ice. Pulse the blender a few times until the ice is finely crushed but not melted.
  5. Combine and adjust: Pour the blended ice mixture into a large serving pitcher. Repeat blending with the remaining ice and bourbon mixture. Stir gently to combine evenly.
  6. Serve immediately: Spoon the slush into glasses and garnish with extra mint sprigs and optional lemon slices. Slap the mint sprig between your hands before garnishing to release aroma. Enjoy chilled.

Notes

Use finely crushed ice for the best slush texture. Muddle mint gently to avoid bitterness. Blend right before serving to maintain icy texture. For a lighter drink, add a splash of cold water or more ice and blend again. Substitute sugar with erythritol for keto-friendly version. Fresh mint is preferred over dried for best flavor.
