Make your own pumpkin chai latte concentrate at home with real pumpkin puree, black tea, and warm spices. This easy stovetop recipe creates a flavorful base for hot or iced lattes that tastes better than store-bought and saves you money.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups water (filtered preferred)
  • 68 black tea bags (e.g., Lipton or Tetley)
  • ½ cup pumpkin puree (100% pure, not pumpkin pie filling)
  • ½ cup brown sugar (packed; light or dark)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (pure)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Bring 4 cups of water to a simmer in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat (small bubbles around the edges).
  2. Whisk in ½ cup pumpkin puree until fully dissolved and smooth, about 30 seconds.
  3. Stir in ½ cup packed brown sugar and 2 tablespoons honey, whisking until dissolved.
  4. Add 6-8 black tea bags and steep in the simmering liquid for 5 minutes (do not boil).
  5. Stir in 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground ginger, and a pinch of salt.
  6. Simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent scorching.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Let cool for 5 minutes.
  8. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer into a glass jar, pressing on tea bags to extract all liquid. Discard tea bags and residue.
  9. Cool completely to room temperature, then seal and refrigerate.

Notes

Do not boil the tea bags to avoid bitterness. Whisk pumpkin puree slowly to prevent clumps. Taste before straining and adjust sweetness or spices as desired. Let concentrate cool completely before refrigerating to prevent cracking. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days; flavors deepen after a day or two. For a hot latte, heat ½ cup concentrate with ½ cup milk. For an iced latte, pour over ice and add cold milk. To make sugar-free, replace brown sugar with monk fruit sweetener and skip honey. For extra pumpkin flavor, increase puree to ¾ cup and reduce water by ¼ cup.
