Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 34 pounds pork shoulder or pork butt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce (plus more for serving)
  • 12 slider buns or Hawaiian rolls
  • Coleslaw mix (optional)
  • Pickles (for serving)
  • Extra BBQ sauce (for drizzling)

Instructions

  1. Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels. Trim excess fat if needed, leaving about 1/4 inch.
  2. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne (if using). Rub the mixture all over the pork.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the pork for 3-4 minutes per side until a deep brown crust forms.
  4. In the slow cooker, whisk together chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Place the seared pork into the slow cooker. Pour any skillet juices over the top. Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours or on HIGH for 5-6 hours until fork-tender.
  6. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and let rest on a cutting board for 10-15 minutes. Shred with two forks, discarding large pieces of fat.
  7. Return shredded pork to the slow cooker. Add 1 cup BBQ sauce and stir. Cook on LOW for another 20-30 minutes.
  8. Toast the slider buns in a skillet, under the broiler, or on a grill until lightly golden.
  9. Assemble sliders: pile pulled pork onto bottom buns, top with coleslaw (if using), pickles, and extra BBQ sauce. Place top buns on and press gently.
  10. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Don’t skip the sear—it adds deep flavor. Cook on LOW for best tenderness. Let pork rest before shredding to retain moisture. Add BBQ sauce at the end to prevent burning. For a spicier version, add chipotle peppers. Leftovers keep for 4 days in the fridge or 3 months in the freezer.
