These easy spiderweb Halloween sugar cookies feature a soft, buttery dough with a subtle tang from cream cheese, topped with a glossy black-and-white spiderweb icing. The design looks impressive but requires only a toothpick and a steady hand.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 oz (56g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups (312g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Black gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and cream cheese together until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes on medium speed. Add the granulated sugar and beat for another 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract, then beat on low until just combined. The mixture may look slightly curdled.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
  4. Turn the dough out onto plastic wrap, flatten into a 1-inch thick disk, wrap tightly, and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. Lightly flour a work surface and rolling pin. Roll the chilled dough to about ¼-inch thickness. Cut out rounds with a 2.5 to 3-inch cookie cutter. Gather scraps, press together, and reroll once.
  7. Place cookies on prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until edges are just barely golden. Centers should look slightly underdone.
  8. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  9. In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract until thick but spreadable (honey consistency). Add more milk if needed.
  10. Scoop out about ¼ cup of white icing and set aside. Add black gel food coloring to the remaining icing, starting with a small amount and adding more until desired shade is reached (about 1 teaspoon). Transfer black icing to a piping bag or small zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off.
  11. Using an offset spatula or butter knife, spread a thin, even layer of white icing over each cooled cookie. Work quickly so the icing stays wet.
  12. While the white icing is still wet, pipe 3-4 concentric circles of black icing onto the cookie, starting from the center and working outward, leaving about ½ inch between circles.
  13. Take a toothpick and drag it from the center of the cookie outward through all the black circles. Wipe the toothpick clean, then drag from the edge inward toward the center. Repeat around the cookie, spacing drags about 1 inch apart.
  14. Let decorated cookies sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to allow the icing to set completely.

Notes

Chill the dough for at least 20 minutes to prevent spreading. Use gel food coloring for deep black color. Work in small batches (2-3 cookies at a time) to keep the white icing wet for the web pattern. Keep icing covered with a damp paper towel to prevent skinning. Cookies stay fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Undecorated cookies can be frozen for up to 3 months.
