fun mummy hot dogs - featured image

A quick and spooky Halloween appetizer made by wrapping hot dogs in crescent roll dough strips and adding cheddar cheese eyes. Perfect for last-minute parties or busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Hot dogs (beef or turkey), cut into thirds or halves
  • 1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough, separated into triangles and cut into strips
  • Sharp cheddar cheese, cut into small thin squares (approx. 1/2 inch)
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • Poppy seeds or sesame seeds (for pupils)
  • Melted butter (optional, for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut cheddar cheese into small, thin squares and set aside.
  3. Unwrap hot dogs and cut them into thirds or halves.
  4. Unroll crescent dough and cut each triangle in half lengthwise to create long, thin strips (approx. 1 inch wide).
  5. Wrap a strip of dough around each hot dog piece, overlapping slightly, leaving the top exposed for the face.
  6. Place two cheese squares on the exposed face area of each mummy and press them in slightly to adhere.
  7. Brush the dough strips with the egg wash mixture.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the dough is golden brown and puffy.
  9. Let cool for 2 minutes before serving. Note: Cheese will be very hot.

Notes

Ensure the dough is wrapped tightly to prevent unraveling. Keep cheese cold until baking to prevent sliding. If dough is dry, dampen the area slightly to help cheese adhere. Can be assembled ahead and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking. Reheat leftovers in the oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes.
