A quick and easy smash burger bar recipe perfect for patriotic gatherings, featuring juicy, crispy-edged patties and toppings arranged like the American flag for a festive, customizable party experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, for seasoning
  • Vegetable oil or canola oil, for the skillet (high smoke point)
  • Soft hamburger buns, preferably brioche or potato buns
  • Butter, softened (for toasting buns)
  • Mayonnaise or your favorite burger sauce
  • Sharp cheddar cheese slices (optional)
  • Sliced ripe tomatoes
  • Fresh iceberg lettuce or shredded green cabbage
  • Blueberries or black olives
  • Pickles, sliced
  • Red onion rings, thinly sliced (optional)
  • Crispy bacon strips (optional)
  • Avocado slices (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Toppings (15 minutes): Rinse and slice all your toppings—tomatoes into thin rounds, onions into rings, pickles sliced lengthwise, and wash blueberries. Arrange them on platters in stripes and sections to create the American flag pattern: blueberries in the upper left corner, tomato slices forming red stripes, and lettuce or shredded cabbage filling the white stripes.
  2. Form Burger Balls (5 minutes): Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions, rolling each loosely into a ball about 4 oz (113g). Don’t overwork the meat; keep it light for juicy results.
  3. Heat Your Skillet (5 minutes): Place your cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add a teaspoon of vegetable oil and let it shimmer but not smoke.
  4. Toast the Buns (5 minutes): Spread softened butter on the cut sides of the buns. Place them butter-side down on the skillet near the edge to toast lightly until golden brown. Set aside.
  5. Cook the Patties (10 minutes): Place one beef ball on the skillet. Using your spatula, smash it down firmly to about ¼ inch (6mm) thickness. Season immediately with salt and pepper. Cook without moving for 2-3 minutes until the edges are brown and crispy. Flip carefully and add a slice of cheddar cheese if using. Cook another 1-2 minutes until cheese melts and the patty is cooked through but still juicy.
  6. Repeat for Remaining Patties (10 minutes): Continue with the other beef balls, managing the heat so the skillet doesn’t cool down too much.
  7. Assemble Your Burgers (10 minutes): Spread mayonnaise or burger sauce on the bottom buns. Layer lettuce or shredded cabbage, then the burger patty, tomato slices, onions, pickles, and top with more sauce if desired. Cap with the toasted top bun.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the skillet; cook in batches if needed. Keep the skillet hot and oiled to prevent sticking. Let the crust form before flipping patties. Keep cooked patties warm in a 200°F (93°C) oven covered with foil if serving a crowd. For gluten-free, use gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps and check sauces for gluten. Vegetarian options include smashed portobello mushrooms or plant-based patties.
