Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds fresh sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • Additional butter for topping (if using separate melting method)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Place chopped sweet potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender.
  3. Drain the potatoes well and let them sit for a few minutes to steam off excess moisture.
  4. Transfer potatoes to a large mixing bowl and mash until smooth using a potato masher or food mill. Let cool slightly.
  5. Add softened butter, heavy cream, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to the mashed potatoes. Mix until well combined.
  6. In a small saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Stir in brown sugar, maple syrup, and chopped pecans. Cook for 2-3 minutes until glossy.
  7. Pour the sweet potato mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish and spread evenly.
  8. Spoon the pecan topping over the sweet potato base, covering completely.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the topping is bubbly and edges are golden brown.
  10. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Ensure sweet potatoes are drained well to prevent a watery casserole. Toasting pecans beforehand enhances flavor. For a gooier texture, add marshmallows during the last 5 minutes of baking. Can be made ahead by storing base and topping separately in the fridge.
